If you know me, you know that I tend to distance myself from any kind of news. Life is hard enough as it is. I don’t need to know about the latest outrage, or just how brightly the trash fire of American society is burning.
It’s a self-defense mechanism.
So for something to “ping” on my radar, it really has to be prevalent.
Kinda Like Ghostbusters 3.
So, yeah, there’s going to be another Ghostbusters movie. And, yeah, director Jason Reitman got into some hot water because of what he said in interviews about “Not wanting to make another ‘Juno’,” and about how he was going to “Put Ghostbusters back in the hands of the fans.”
First, I don’t get the logic behind not wanting to “Make another ‘Juno’.” Juno won the Oscar for best original screenplay, and was nominated for several others. It also made 33.5 times more than it cost to produce.
Sure the scale is different, but why the hell wouldn’t you want to shoot for that?
Then there’s that whole “Back in the hands of the fans,” thing.
What fans is he talking about? Fans of the original movie? Fans of the 2016 movie?
Or is he talking about the “fans” who buried the 2016 movie under waves of sexism and misogynistic vitriol because the leads were female.
I’ve read Reitman’s statement. I’ve read what he said, then I read what he said that he meant, etc.
It’s gotten to the point where I probably won’t see the poorly-titled “Ghostbusters 3” – which should be subtitled, “We forgot about 2016.” – even if someone offered to pay for the ticket.
You know, out of all the things Jason said, here’s one thing that he didn’t say, not once:
That shit needs to stop.
I cannot believe that now, in the 21st century, we are *still* having the argument over whether something has merit based on the gender of who created it.
That shit needs to stop.
Now, maybe, Jason had some good rationalizations for why he didn’t use his platform to shine a light into the darkness and shout:
That shit needs to stop!
He sure as hell doesn’t have any good reasons not to.
And, if you’re one of those people, and you’re reading this…
Stop being one of those people.
You are not being cool.
You are not upholding the “purity” of anything.
You are being wretched.
You are being cowardly.
And you are working to silence so many voices that have so many awesome things to say.
That shit needs to stop.
