What Doesn’t Help You…Isn’t helping you.

Fair Warning: I am going to sound a little draconian here, but just hear me out…

There are things in my life – and I’m going to wager that there are things in yours as well – that Simply aren’t doing me any good,

And they’ve got to go.

Period.

There, the draconian part is out of the way. Now that we know what to do with those bits. Here comes the harder part:

Figuring out what they are.

Now some of you might have just jumped to the conclusion that I’m talking about being “More Productive.” On the coat-tails of that, I can hear the shing of axes being sharpened, and the subtle shiss of the sinister side-eye aimed at “Time wasters” like Television, Music, and Books.

Just hold on a second. Those things are important. Of course there’s too much of a good thing, but I’m not talking about that. Sometimes you need to binge watch the entire run of the Wheel of Time, or Rings of Power. As long as you don’t make a habit of it, you’re still good.

The things I’m talking about are more insidious. They’re hidden in plain sight. Camouflaged by the day-to-day, so thoroughly, that you might not even be aware of them.

Want an example? I’ve got one.

When was the last time you talked yourself up, compared to last time you thought something not so great about yourself?

Be honest.

If I’m not careful, I can manage the latter on a daily basis while going weeks without a good word for myself.

If this was external, if it was a real person doing this to you, would you want to hang around with them?

Me neither.

So that shit has to go. It’s not doing me any favors and it’s actually harmful.

Now this is an overt example, and I’m using it on purpose. As Dave Robison says, “You find what you’re looking for…” I think this is true more often than not. In that case, why not be on the lookout for Awesome?

Don’t wait for the turn of the year. Start right now. Today. Are there things – either external or internal – to your life that need to be pruned back so the rest of the plant can flourish?

Because the world needs more flourish.

Thanks for reading. Be safe out there. Be Excellent to Each other – and yourself.

I’ll see you on Thursday.
