Be Excellent to Each Other

For the past several months, I’ve signed off these posts with the Title of this post:

Be Excellent to Each Other

It’s a nice way to sign off, I think, and it’s a Bill and Ted reference (which isn’t a bad thing in itself), and I think it’s a good lens through which to view the world.

Let me tell you what it isn’t:

A suggestion.

It’s what I want to see in the world and the only way that’ll happen is if I keep saying it. Out Loud, Online, Everywhere.

And I get it – I really do – times are hard. There’s stress and uncertainty and our avenues to release some of that back-pressure might not be available to us. It’s easy to punch down – especially when you’ve got a strong opinion about something.

That’s not being Excellent.

It’s actually being pretty shitty – which is about as far from “Excellent” as you can get, and it has farther reaching effects than you might think. We’re all connected – now more than ever – and that not-so hot “Hot Take” has a knock on effect to where you could be making heaps of folk’s days just that much worse.

Now I’m not saying that you can’t have an opinion. I’m not saying that you can’t disagree with me.

I’m saying Be Excellent to Each Other.

Now your definition of excellent may vary from mine. It probably does, but if we take a look at that word “Excellent,” I think that we’ll find that, universally, it’s a better starting off point. It’s not just about treating someone the way you’d want to be treated, it’s about going that much farther.

Be Excellent to each Other.

And if you’ve got to get rid of that backpressure, find something that you like – Something that really turns your dials to 11 and tell someone about it. Geek Out about it.

That’s going to have several benefits: The first is that you’re channeling that extra energy for something good. The Second is that you may just be introducing someone to something new that they might end up enjoying as much as you do. Third, You might also be helping out the creator of that something. Nothing sells books, music, art, etc.. like word of mouth. That Geeking Out you’re doing, might have a positive impact on them as well.

Taking the time, instead, to shout about how this thing is *Freaking Amazing* has such a better knock-on effect, and the results are farther reaching.

Thanks for reading.

Be safe out there. Be Excellent to Each other.

I’ll see you on Thursday.
