Your mileage may vary, but if your area is anything like it is in my neck of the woods, walking across your front lawn, this time last week, felt and sounded like you were walking across a large piece of toast.
Crunch, crunch, crunch.
This morning, though, there was significantly less crunch. Everywhere I looked, I saw green had come up through the thatch. Even though it seemed like this change had taken place overnight, I know that a bunch of stuff had been happening beneath the surface.
Out of sight.
That’s what I want to talk about today. That thing you’re working on? Even though you can’t see immediate results, it’s important to keep in mind that things are still happening beneath the surface. Ideas are growing, skills are improving, endurance is building…
Things. Are. Happening.
The truly “Overnight” success stories – if they even exist – are very rare indeed. Nearly always, what you’re looking at is the result of a lot of work behind the scenes. Late night, or early morning work, the real unglamorous stuff that nobody sees, but we (those of us that have been there) all talk about when we get together.
You’re building something. I’ve said it before. It’s a long game, a marathon, not a sprint. You’re planting seeds. You don’t plant a seed and expect to wake up the next day to find a tree. You’ve got to put in the work watering, fertilizing, and nurturing, all the while believing that this work will pay off somewhere further down the Timeline.
And the even better part? It’s the Journey, not the destination. There are milestones to celebrate, bits to prune, little adjustments to make because you’re not the same person you were when you first planted those seeds. That’s all worth acknowledging, remembering, and learning from.
Thanks for reading. Be safe out there. Be Excellent to Each other – and yourself.
I’ll see you on Thursday.
