Five-Thing Thursday: February 29th!

Welcome to a special installment of Five-Thing Thursday! Why is it special, you ask? Because it is happening on February 29th – a day that only comes around about once every 4 years.

Here are Five Things that come around every Four Years:

Thing #1: The Men’s and Women’s Rugby World Cup. These events are staggered, with the next Women’s Rugby World Cup happening in 2025 in England, while the Men’s competition will be in 2027 in Australia

Thing #2: The British and Irish Lions Tour. Yes this is more rugby, but this is worth mentioning because the Lions is a Dream Team made up of players from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. This team tours New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. These tours started back 1888. More notable: There has never been a Women’s Lions team (ridiculous, right??) BUT A Women’s team was created THIS YEAR, with the Inaugural Tour scheduled for New Zealand in 2027

Thing #3: Leap Years! You know they exist, but did you know that they were created to keep the seasons and our calendar in sync because it takes the Earth about 365 days, 5 hours and some change to orbit the Sun. So every (almost) 4 years we tweak the calendar to keep x-mas (in the northern hemisphere) during the time of the year when it’s cold

Thing #4: What is playing on the Mental Jukebox this week: Dancing in the Dark by Beyond the Black (Sorry Bruce, I like this one better)

Thing #5: The Olympics. Yes, this is a sports oriented post, but the scale of these events requires a lot of prep time and provide much more entertainment bang for your buck than other quadrennial events that could be mentioned.

What have I been reading?

Making it So by Sir Patrick Stewart

A Bad Deal for the Whole Galaxy by Alex White

Wonderbook by Jeff Vandemere

What am I looking forward to this week?

The Six Nations is still taking a break, but I’ve got Warmer weather on the way and round 2 of the Super Rugby Pacific tournament coming up. After that, all eyes turn to Saturday, March 9th. Scotland have a chance to win this one for the first time ever, though there’s still a bit of work to be done.
